Formed in April of 2014, the mission of this workgroup is to reduce the number of opioid overdoses, overdose deaths and the misuse of prescription drugs in our area. There are over 30 members of this group, with a core of 15 who meet every month on the first Thursday from 6-7:30 pm at the Stony Hill Fire Dept. The group is comprised of healthcare, treatment and prevention professionals, local officials, law enforcement, parents of young people with addiction disorders, people in recovery and others. On occasion, we invite speakers or trainers to update us on activities and information that impacts this widespread problem. We gather local data and use it to prioritize the initiatives targeted at bringing about community level change. We have distributed 1000 harm reduction cards, over 100 flyers to primary care physicians, chiropractors, dentists and pharmacies. We participate on the statewide opioid prevention sub-committee of the CT Alcohol and Drug Policy Council, among other groups that are working on this very challenging issue.
During FY17, we have designated separate committees to work on:
- Education and Awareness
- Availability of Narcan and
- Early Intervention and Access to Treatment.
